Nickel Isotope Fractionation During Magmatic Differentiation

The behavior of nickel (Ni) isotopes during magmatic differentiation is not adequately explored. Here, we find that tholeiitic rocks in the Kīlauea Iki (KI) lava lake, Hawai'i, show progressively lighter Ni isotopic compositions with increasing differentiation, whereas calc-alkaline from thick Kamchatka arc (30–45 km), located at convergent boundary Eurasian and Pacific plates isotope values as MgO decrease. Forty-three global intermediate-felsic continental igneous analyzed this study display large variations, Eoarchean samples having light fall trend defined by KI lavas, post-Eoarchean showing systematically heavier overlapping those rocks. dichotomy results crystallization isotopically heavy magnetite low-pressure participation sulfide separation removes high-pressure magmas traversing crust. Combined Rhyolite-MELTS sulfur concentration saturation simulations, demonstrate fractionation mainly controlled tempo formation, which a function pressure, oxygen fugacity, water activity.
